Tamil language has a rich literary tradition of over 2 thousand years, starting with the Sangam poems that are followed by didactic works, five epics, religious hymns and modern literature. Of the 5 classical languages of the world in which great literary works were created 2 thousand years ago – Tamil, Sanskrit, Latin, Greek and Hebrew, Tamil and Greek alone are spoken languages today with a continued literary tradition.

Many in the Tamil community are working together to create a professor position for Tamil studies at Harvard University which is the oldest institution of higher learning in the US. Harvard also remains as the best research university with “very high” research activity across the arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine. Once set up, the position will exist at Harvard University for eternity. It is a matter of great prestige to the Tamils to establish a Tamil teaching position at Harvard. Also, Tamil language research will be done by scholars. Your children, grandchildren and future generations of Tamils will be able to learn Tamil at Harvard. The total amount needed is 6 million U.S. dollars. Dr. Janakiraman and Dr. Thirugnanasambandam of U.S. A. have each donated half a million dollars to the Harvard Tamil chair. The Tamil community needs to collect the remaining 5 million dollars. If 5,000 Tamils donate 1,000 dollars each or if 10,000 people donate 500 dollars, we can achieve this goal easily.
