India in Olympics – Till Rio Summer Olympics 2016

So far, this year’s Summer Olympics 2016 at Rio has not been a prospective one for the Indian sportsmen, and thanks to this we are bombarded with disappointed voices and negativity from every side. Finally we have a reason to rejoice as silver medal (P.V.Sindhu) and a bronze medal (Sakshi Malik) from two strong willed Indian girls, has elevated our medal tally from null to 2 in the Rio Olympics 2016. Kudos to the winners!
 
Let’s take a few minutes to reminisce about a brief synopsis of India in the Olympics from 1900 to today and chill our-selves by glorifying Indian winners from the past and present.

India won a Total of 26 medals in the Olympic history from 1900 (Paris) to 2016 (Rio de Janeiro).

India did not participate in the first Olympic game in 1896 at Athens.

India also did not participate in the 1904 (St.Louis) , 1908 (London) , 1912 (Stockholm) Olympic games.

India participated in the Olympics for the first time in 1900, and was represented by only one athlete, Norman Pritchard. He was of British descent and won 2 silver medals in athletics (200 metres & 200 metre hurdles).

Indian National Field Hockey Team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning 11 medals (8 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). The win included six successive gold medals from 1928–1956.

Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player, who is widely considered as the greatest field hockey player of all time. Chand is most remembered for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition he won three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, and 1936) in field hockey.

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was the first post -independence individual Olympic medal winner. He won a bronze in wrestling in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Sushil Kumar is the first (and only) Indian since Norman Pritchard to win multiple individual Olympic medals. He won a bronze in wrestling in the 2008 Beijing Olympics

and a silver in the 2012 London Olympics.

Leander Paes won India’s first and only Tennis Olympic bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Karnam Malleswari was the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. She won a bronze in weightlifting in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Abhinav Bindra made history when he won India’s first ever individual Olympic gold in shooting (10m Air Rifle) in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore  is a Veteran Indian shooter who won the Silver Medal in shooting (Double Trap) at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Vijender Singh won bronze medal in boxing (middleweight) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the first ever Olympic medal for an Indian boxer.

Vijay Kumar, won the silver medal in the shooting (25 metre rapid fire pistol) event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Saina Nehwal is the only Indian badminton player to have won a bronze Olympic medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Mary Kom, she is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 London Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and won the bronze medal.

Gagan Narang ,won the bronze medal in the shooting (10 m Air Rifle) event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Yogeshwar Dutt ,won the bronze medal in wrestling ( 60Kg Freestyle) at the  2012 London Olympics.

Dipa Karmakar , is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics and the first Indian gymnast to do so in 52 years. She attained 4th position in

Women’s Vault Gymnastics event of Rio Olympics 2016 with an overall score of 15.066.

 Pusarla Venkata Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in badminton at the Rio Olympics 2016. 

Sakshi Malik is an freestyle wrestler, won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category wrestling at the Rio Olympics 2016.
