If you have ever visited the digital painting section in this blog, you would have seen me reiterating several times the fact that I’m an ardent fan of the Tamil historical novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ by Amarar Kalki.
I love his portrayal of each and every character in the novel. When I was a little kid, I remember this novel being published in the Tamil magazine ‘Kalki’ as a series. My Mom and Dad had the habit of collecting episodes, useful articles, recipes etc., from Various magazines and later binding them into separate volumes. Like all curious little kidS, I used to flip through the pages, especially to look at the pictures. I used to do the same with these bound volumes of Ponniyin Selvan novel and one of the main things that caught my attention and fascination was the illustration done by the artist Maniam Selvan. Years later when I started reading this book, I guess these pictures reignited my passion to create a vivid picture of the characters and settings, fueling my desire to get more and more glued to the novel.
‘Poonguzhali’ is one of the strongest female characters In the novel. She is independant, strong, fierce, intelligent, bold and beautiful. Recently when I stumbled upon a picture of the original drawing of this character in the internet, I desperately wanted to recreate it , the result being this pencil sketch. I’m definitely aware that the rating for my drawing is really, really low or zero to be precise, but please excuse me as I couldn’t resist sharing this one out of love for ‘Poonguzhali’.
Sharing below an excerpt from the novel about Poonguzhali’s introduction.
